Ask a Geologist
What should I do while I'm spinning my wheels waiting to GTFO of Vancouver? Theoretical return to NC is December 2012 (assuming the world doesn't end). Also, I'm pretty well housebound after 7pm (my daughter's bed time). Also, I hate licorice. I have a job where I work 4 days a week. The main problem is that we don't have any friends or anything to do. My attempts at befriending other parents have gone poorly because as it turns out, I still don't really like other people's kids.
You should become an advice columnist on your blog. JKLOLZ Don't do that.
Do they have libraries in Canada? I always forget about how busy the library is and what great programs they have for grown ups and little people. Also, since you're trying to leave you might think about making a list of historic crap to see and go see it Sarah Vowell style. Do all the touristy stuff! It's educational.
As I've mentioned before, volunteering is a good, low pressure way to meet people with common interests. Just make sure you are volunteering for stuff you actually want to do or else it starts to feel like work.
Taking classes is another way to meet people and learn new things. Martial arts, sewing, cake decorating, foreign language accounting...whatever. You can build up your resume for your move to NC or just do something fun. Many schools have online continuing education classes that are cheap.
As I am writing this I am finding that there's a bunch of stuff I don't know about Canada. (See also: Do they have public libraries? I mean I assume they do but I've never asked. Does everyone have those? I have no idea! Whooooahhhh.) Do they have the YMCA or something like it? Joining something like the Y or finding a community center is good for the whole family and a nice way to get out of the house. Most of them have children's activities or free sitters. B and G just did a cheap high ropes course at a community center in town and they are flipping out about it. They have a billion other cool things to do like pottery classes and Tai Chi.
I don't like meeting people so I probably wouldn't do any of those things...well that's kind of hypocritical actually. I did just join a Young Adult Book Group to meet people on purpose. However I would completely understand if you didn't know anyone and didn't really feel like meeting anyone new with a move out of the country looming on the horizon. I like cooking and doing crafts to pass my free time. Kids love of all ages love the heck out of some crafts. Here are some of my favorite craft blogs:
If you're looking for more of a productive hobby I recommend trolling thrift stores and reselling shit on Ebay and ETSY. You might have your own stuff to sell to prepare for you move. You could also become obsessed with couponing, train for a marathon, start a themed blog, write a book or read every Nancy Drew novel ever written. Becoming obsessed with something is a great way to pass the time.
Or start protesting licorice factories. Black licorice is an abomination.
PS Glad you're moving back to NC.
