Jake!

Name:

Jake Bromberg

Hometown:

I don't have much connection left to where I grew up. Let's say I'm from Chapel Hill, NC.

If you were in an action movie fight scene what song would be playing and why?

For the blaxploitation film I'll never star in, I'd like to hear some horns blaze before I whip some ass. Let's try The Budos Band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhggVynRhXQ.

What's a good memory you have about snow?

August '94, I turned an Alaskan glacier partially yellow. True story.

What foreign languages did you take in school and how have you used them?

I took Spanish for four semesters and I've used my learning so far to feel guilty about how I don't speak a lick of any of it.

Have you ever flown a kite? Why or why not?

I last flew a box kite on the Washington Mall in March '89. There's no official reason for this other than My Parents Made Me Do It.

Do you have a website or blog that you'd like to plug?

I host a music show every other Monday from 7-9PM on Chapel Hill radio station WXYC 89.3 FM. It's free format, which means I play anything and everything, typically stuff I've never even heard before my show. You can stream us at wxyc.org. We're imminently releasing an iPhone app. Stay tuned.

--------------------
For my birthday one year when I was in graduate school my friend Jess N. said, "What do you want to do for your birthday?" I told her I wanted to make my own action movie like Charlies Angels. She had her parents mail her a video camera, we got all of the other geologists and a few of our other friends together and made a plan. We would find trashy outfits, shoes that weren't for running and we would fight crime. We met at Bottletree Bakery and over brioche and cocoa we developed a story line. Our story line was basically just a list of things we wanted to do.

  1. Rebecca jumps over a fountain.
  2. Alexis does a cartwheel.
  3. Beth elbows someone in the face.
Our list thusly prepared we put a date on the calendar but then we realized....we have no bad guys! Who will we fight? Jess was not deterred. She chatted up the guys from the local bluegrass band, the Kudzu Kings, and asked if they'd come wrestle a bunch of strange girls on video. They agreed!

The result?

Hals Gals!

One day I'll do this again and Jake will get his wish. As you can see, the kids got dance moves, and he'd be an excellent evil genius crime boss.

Some other time, possibly a FFF, I'll have to interview Jake again and have him tell you about coffee. He's practically a coffee sommelier. Do they have a name for that?
