Closet Conundrum

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Hello my name is Julie and I am a clothes-a-holic. I've been known to not wear the same outfit twice in the same semester. I'm an excellent shopper from a line of excellent shoppers and I employ a technique known as the $12 rule. It it costs more than $12 I'm not buying it. My parents live in an outlet town with the best Goodwill in the world and if you're shopping with me you better believe that I'm only looking at the clearance racks of 50% or more. Shopping like this leads to a lot of guilt free purchases so I buy in bulk. I buy multiple colors and in some cases multiple sizes. (Just in case.)

See? I have a problem.

I have been in serious denial for some time now but after moving these clothes during our epic move last fall I decided to be really cut throat and donated a few bags of stuff. At the beginning of the season after lugging everything downstairs I decided to have a real "Cone to Jesus" meeting with my clothes and added a few more bags of stuff to the Goodwill pile. Then I lost a bunch of weight and two interesting things happened.
1. I commented to my nutritionist that all of these things in my closet that didn't fit before now fit! Yay, right? And she said, bewildered, "You have things in your closet that don't fit?"
2. My husband found a bag of discards in the garage where it had been side tracked and brought it inside. "Hey baby! I found all these clothes that probably fit you now!" Yay....right.

At this point I started to think that this might be a problem. A first world problem but a problem nonetheless. I haven't been buying clothes in months and months. I've really curbed that habit. But I was starting to think that I owned to many clothes so I posted a poll on my other blog that said, "How many clothes is a reasonable amount to have in your closet?"

Here are the results:

10-20 each shirts and bottoms
4 (50.0%)

20-30 each shirts and bottoms
1 (12.5%)

30-40 each shirts and bottoms
1 (12.5%)

40-50 each shirts and bottoms
0 (0.0%)

whatever fits in your closet
2 (25.0%)

Ugh. It was just as I suspected. I have too many clothes. I've decided that I'm going to have a mega yard

sale with some of my friends, take some things to consignment and just overall....try to keep a reasonable

amount of clothes in the closet so that I can actually have a closet that looks like a closet.

You know, I don't remember if I responded to that poll, because I remember thinking, "I don't even have 10 of each!" But, I'm not a shopper and clothes are VERY low on our budget priority list right now. I'd love to have more options, especially if I were going into an office (or school or whatever) every day so that I wouldn't be wearing the same things all the time.

My sister is a lot like you, though. She does occasionally splurge, but mostly she just has a knack for finding really great deals on fashionable stuff. She's so "in" all the time. I used to be green with envy, but nowadays, I just admire her. :)

hah i LOVE the $12 rule! i have always said that all clothes should cost $15 or less cuz i'm not paying $100 for designer jeans.

i really do want to clean out my closet any my house. you should take some pictures of the piles you are donating and the before/after of your closet :)
